Science
Intent
At Hertford Heath, the Science curriculum is designed to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the world and to develop their understanding of the natural and physical phenomena that shape it. Using the White Rose Science scheme as the basis of our curriculum, we provide a broad, coherent and carefully sequenced programme that enables pupils to build secure scientific knowledge and develop the skills needed to think and work like scientists.
Our intent is for pupils to develop a strong understanding of key scientific concepts across biology, chemistry and physics, alongside the disciplinary knowledge needed to investigate, question, observe, compare, classify and conclude. Through practical investigations, enquiry-based learning and carefully structured teaching, pupils learn to make sense of the world around them and to appreciate the relevance of science in everyday life.
We want pupils to become confident, inquisitive and reflective scientists who can use evidence to explain ideas and solve problems. The curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils are supported to access high-quality science and develop the knowledge they need to succeed in future learning.
Implementation
Science is taught through the White Rose Science scheme, which provides a clear and progressive sequence of learning from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The curriculum is carefully planned so that pupils revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts over time, building secure knowledge and conceptual understanding.
Teachers use the scheme to ensure that pupils are taught the full range of scientific knowledge and enquiry skills, including:
- biology, chemistry and physics knowledge
- working scientifically
- observing, comparing, grouping and classifying
- asking questions and making predictions
- setting up fair tests and recording results
- drawing conclusions and evaluating findings
- using scientific vocabulary accurately
Lessons are designed to provide opportunities for practical investigation, discussion, prediction and analysis. Pupils are encouraged to explore ideas, test hypotheses and explain outcomes using evidence. Teachers use precise modelling, clear explanations and scaffolded support to ensure that all pupils can engage successfully with scientific learning.
The curriculum is structured so that key knowledge is revisited regularly and linked to prior learning, enabling pupils to build on what they already know. Subject-specific vocabulary is taught explicitly and reinforced throughout lessons so that pupils can talk and write about science with increasing confidence and accuracy. Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners through appropriate scaffolding, challenge and retrieval practice.
Science is enriched through practical experiments, outdoor learning, investigation and links to real-world contexts, helping pupils to recognise the importance and excitement of science in everyday life. The curriculum encourages pupils to be curious, analytical and resilient, whilst developing a sense of responsibility towards the world around them.
