Computing
Intent
At Hertford Heath, the Computing curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Using the Purple Mash scheme as the basis of our curriculum, we provide a carefully sequenced and engaging programme that supports pupils to become safe, responsible and creative users of technology.
Our intent is for pupils to develop a secure understanding of the three main strands of Computing (computer science, information technology and digital literacy) so that they can apply their learning in meaningful and practical ways. Pupils learn how to code, create and manipulate digital content, communicate effectively using technology, and understand how to stay safe online. The curriculum also encourages pupils to think logically, solve problems and develop resilience when debugging and improving their work.
We want all pupils to become confident and independent users of technology who can use digital tools purposefully and responsibly. The curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that pupils of all abilities have access to high-quality Computing and are well prepared for the digital demands of the future.
Implementation
Computing is taught through the Purple Mash scheme, which provides a clear progression of knowledge and skills from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The curriculum is carefully planned so that pupils revisit key concepts regularly and build on prior learning over time.
Teachers use the scheme to ensure that pupils are taught a broad range of Computing knowledge and skills, including:
- programming and coding
- creating, editing and sharing digital content
- using technology safely and responsibly
- understanding data and information
- developing computational thinking and problem-solving skills
Lessons are structured to provide a balance of direct teaching, modelling, guided practice and independent application. Pupils are taught to use subject-specific vocabulary accurately and to explain their thinking clearly. The Purple Mash platform supports engagement through interactive activities, practical tasks and opportunities to apply learning across the curriculum.
The curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of all learners through scaffolding, modelling and appropriate challenge. Staff ensure that pupils who need additional support are given opportunities to revisit and practise key skills, whilst those who grasp concepts quickly are challenged to extend their understanding. Online safety is woven throughout the Computing curriculum and reinforced regularly so that pupils develop the knowledge and habits needed to stay safe in digital environments.
Computing is celebrated through pupil work and opportunities to share digital outcomes. Our Computing curriculum supports pupils to become creative, critical and responsible digital citizens who can use technology confidently in school and beyond.
