PE

Intent

At Hertford Heath the Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to develop pupils who are physically confident, healthy and active, whilst also fostering teamwork, resilience, fair play and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Our curriculum is supported by Premier Education Services and a carefully planned set of curriculum overviews, which together ensure that pupils experience a broad, balanced and progressive PE programme across the year.

Our intent is for pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to succeed in a range of physical activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities. Through high-quality teaching and progressive planning, pupils learn to move with control, coordination and confidence, whilst also understanding the importance of physical fitness, healthy lifestyles and personal wellbeing.

We want all pupils to enjoy being active and to develop positive attitudes towards PE and sport. The curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that every child can participate, improve and experience success regardless of their starting point. It also helps pupils develop transferable life skills such as perseverance, cooperation, leadership and self-discipline.

Implementation

PE is facilitated by Premier Education Services who provide curriculum overviews, which set out a clear and progressive structure for learning from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The curriculum is sequenced so that pupils revisit key skills and apply them in increasingly complex and challenging contexts over time.

Teachers and specialist providers use the curriculum overviews to ensure that pupils are taught a broad range of physical skills and concepts, including:

  • fundamental movement skills
  • games, including invasion, striking and fielding, and net and wall activities
  • gymnastics and dance
  • athletics
  • outdoor and adventurous activities
  • health, fitness and wellbeing

Lessons are planned to support progression in physical competence, tactical understanding and performance. Pupils are taught to apply skills in a variety of situations, work collaboratively, follow rules and use equipment safely and effectively. They are also encouraged to evaluate their own performance and that of others in order to improve.

Premier Education staff work alongside school staff to deliver engaging, active lessons that build confidence and enjoyment. Curriculum overviews ensure that content is well sequenced and that key skills are revisited regularly, supporting long-term progression. Teachers adapt learning to meet the needs of all pupils by providing clear demonstrations, targeted support and appropriate challenge.

PE is enriched through competitive sport, cooperative games, physical challenges, festivals and opportunities for pupils to be active throughout the school day. Our curriculum promotes physical development, teamwork, resilience and a positive attitude to healthy living.
