Art

Intent

At Hertford Heath, the art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, imagination, visual literacy and self-expression. Using the Kapow Art scheme as the foundation for our curriculum, we provide pupils with a broad and well-sequenced programme that develops their knowledge of artists, art movements, techniques and materials over time.

Our aim is for pupils to become confident, reflective and independent artists who can explore ideas, experiment with different media and evaluate their own work and the work of others. Through carefully planned lessons, pupils build their skills in drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and mixed media, while also learning to observe, analyse and respond thoughtfully to a wide range of artistic styles from different cultures and periods.

We want all pupils to see themselves as artists and to develop a lasting appreciation of art and design. The curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that all children can achieve success and make progress, whilst being challenged to deepen their understanding and refine their artistic techniques.

Implementation

Art is taught through the Kapow Art scheme, which provides a clear progression of skills and knowledge from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit key artistic concepts and techniques regularly, building fluency and confidence over time.

Teachers use the scheme’s carefully structured lessons to ensure that pupils are taught the essential knowledge and vocabulary they need in order to talk about art with increasing accuracy and confidence. Lessons include opportunities for children to:

  • explore and experiment with a range of materials, tools and techniques
  • develop drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and collage skills
  • study a diverse range of artists, designers and craft makers
  • evaluate and adapt their own work as they progress
  • apply prior learning in new and increasingly challenging contexts

The curriculum is designed to support progression in both practical skills and conceptual understanding. Knowledge organisers, retrieval practice and opportunities for discussion help pupils to remember and apply what they have learned. Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND, through appropriate scaffolding, modelling and support.

Art is celebrated across the school through displays, sketchbooks, classroom discussion and opportunities to share finished work. The curriculum encourages pupils to value the creative process as well as the final outcome, helping them develop resilience, independence and pride in their achievements.
