PSHE & RSHE

Intent

At Hertford Heath, the PSHE and RSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils to become healthy, safe, responsible and respectful individuals who are able to thrive both now and in the future. Using the Coram Life Education scheme as the foundation of our curriculum, we provide a carefully planned and age-appropriate programme that helps pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to manage their physical health, emotional wellbeing, relationships and personal development.

Our intent is for pupils to understand how to stay safe, make informed choices, build positive relationships and develop a strong sense of self-worth. Through the curriculum, pupils learn about the importance of kindness, respect, consent, online safety, emotional literacy, healthy lifestyles and personal responsibility. They are supported to reflect on their experiences, recognise their feelings and develop strategies to manage change, challenge and risk.

We want all pupils to feel confident in voicing their thoughts, asking questions and seeking help when needed. The curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that every child receives the knowledge and support they need to navigate life safely, respectfully and with confidence.

Implementation

PSHE and RSHE are taught through the Coram Life Education scheme, which provides a clear and progressive framework of learning from Early Years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit key themes regularly and build understanding over time.

Teachers use the scheme to ensure that pupils are taught a broad range of personal, social, health and relationship education, including:

  • health and wellbeing
  • relationships and friendship
  • living in the wider world
  • keeping safe, including online safety
  • emotional regulation and resilience
  • rights, responsibilities and making positive choices
  • physical health, hygiene and lifestyle choices
  • age-appropriate RSHE content

Lessons are designed to be interactive, reflective and discussion-based, allowing pupils to explore ideas in a safe and supportive environment. Teachers use a range of strategies, including modelling, questioning, role-play, stories and structured discussion, to help pupils understand and apply what they have learned.

The curriculum is delivered sensitively and appropriately, with clear consideration of pupils’ age, stage and lived experience. Teachers adapt learning where necessary to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND, using scaffolding, repetition and accessible language. The curriculum also supports safeguarding by ensuring pupils know how to recognise concerns, ask for help and identify trusted adults.

Coram Life Education resources help to make learning engaging, relevant and memorable. Our curriculum reinforces the importance of mental wellbeing, personal safety, healthy relationships and community responsibility, while also supporting pupils to develop
