This week, the children will be looking at cherry models (part-part-whole models). They will be using cubes and numicon to represent numbers up to 10 in many different ways through regrouping. For example, to make 7 they may take 3 blue cubes and 4 red cubes. 7 is the whole number and 3 and 4 are the parts. 7=3+4.
They will then move onto increasingly complex sentences using the Numicon e.g. 10=3+3+2+1+1. It sounds very complicated but by using a range of practical resources children have so much fun finding the different representations of a number.
