Swimming is part of our PE curriculum and children from Years 1 to 6 take part in weekly swimming lessons at Hartham Pool, one term each year. Two classes go each term; Y6 and Y3 in the autumn term, Y5 and Y2 in the spring term and Y4 and Y1 in the summer term.
The children are taken by Mrs King and a Classroom Assistant to the pool by coach each Wednesday afternoon. The lessons are taught by qualified swimming teachers and our staff observe the children whilst they are swimming and supervise them in the changing rooms and on the coach.
All children are expected to attend lessons each week, the lessons are not optional. Children work in four swimming ability groups, dependent on their swimming confidence and ability not on their age. The children work towards swimming badges/achievements – certificates are presented during Friday sharing assemblies.
Girls need to wear a costume, no bikinis. Hair has to be up inside a swimming hat. Boys have to wear swimming trunks, not baggy Bermuda style shorts. Children also need to take a swimming towel. Pierced ear-rings need to be removed on Wednesday mornings, at home before school. Floats and woggles are provided by the pool when needed.
The Swimming schedule will be as follows for the 2018-2019 academic year:
